RIOTING IN FRANCE:

Sarah,

France is struggling to control certain areas of the country.  On the outskirts of many French cities, impoverished communities are becoming increasingly lawless.  High crime and high unemployment have led to intense riots.  Youth gangs barricade streets with burning cars and garbage and hit arriving officers with stones, bottles, and even gunfire.  There are some areas that the police will not even enter.

There are two main causes for this unrest.  First, France’s economy is struggling generally and this can lead to discontent.  Second, France has had a difficult time integrating its minorities.  Most of these areas are populated by immigrants who feel disconnected from French society.

The new president of France has declared security as his number one issue.
